Obama Signs Porkulus Bill…We’re Saved!
By Shawn Swisher · February 17, 2009The Democrats brought home their bacon today when President Barack Obama signed the Porkulus bill into law in Denver, Colorado. Woohoo! Now we can all have our mortgages paid and get six figure jobs! Ahh…good times are coming.
The bill is officially titled the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and was crafted largely in backdoor negotiations, something the President said he would end. Despite what they may try to tell us, this bill was by no means bipartisan. Not a single Republican voted for it in the House and only three voted for it in the Senate. The three Republican turncoats were Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. I’ll have to say I’m proud of the Republicans who made a stand against the largest spending increase in American history. Folks, someone is going to have to pay for this and there isn’t enough rich people out there to take it from. It will either have to be borrowed (more debt for our children), printed (inflation here we come) or taxes will have to be raised for those making less than the $250K Obama talked about during his campaign (yet another broken campaign promise).
According to Senator Snowe, other fellow Republicans told her they believed she did the right thing and wished they could have joined her in voting for the bill. If this is true, I would say they probably didn’t join her because their constituents were flooding their offices with phone calls and emails of disapproval over the bill and they didn’t want to upset their voters. Ms. Snowe and the other two turncoats obviously don’t care about that. Neither do Obama and the rest of the Democrats for that matter. According to two recent Rasmussen polls, a paltry 38% of Americans believe the Stimulus bill will help the economy and 67% of Americans have more confidence in their own judgment than they do in that of Congress. Despite these figures, Pres. Obama, the Democrats and the three Republican turncoats decided to ram it right down our throats because like typical politicians, the only polls they care about are campaign polls. Once elected, most of them could care less about what we think.
Make no mistake, the Democrats own the Porkulus bill now. I’ve seen some say it will be the death of the Republicans for opposing this bill. I disagree. I see no upside for them backing this bill. If they had supported it and the economy prospers, the Democrats would take full credit for the recovery while if it fails, they would call it a bipartisan bill and spread the blame across the aisle. Now that the Repbulicans have opposed it, if the bill succeeds there will be no difference. The Democrats will still take full credit for any success. However, if the bill does little or nothing for the economy, the American people will have nobody to blame but the Democrats and 2010 will not be a good year for them. Here’s to 2010!
