Thursday’s Thoughts

Posted by: Shawn Swisher | Comments (0)

Remember Recovery.gov, the website established by the Obama administration to allow Americans to monitor how well the stimulus money is spent? Yeah, the one that V.P. Biden didn’t even know the website number for, even though he was in charge of it. It was launched in February and apparently already needs an overhaul…TO THE TUNE OF $18 MILLION DOLLARS! Yes, I said $18 million. What in the name of Sam Hill are these morons doing? Why would a website cost $18 million? Just for comparison, the website you’re reading right now costs less than $100 per year. Hey, I got an idea. How about we hop on the first flight back from looney land and get a little dose of reality. Do you think this is an appropriate expenditure of your money?

Yippee, The Stimulus Is Working

Posted by: Shawn Swisher | Comments (0)

At a staged town hall meeting on Wednesday, Chairman Obama told members of the pre-screened audience that the stimulus is working. At the same time, unemployment has risen to 9.5%, the highest level in a quarter century.

Can’t…stop…laughing.

It seems Republican governors aren’t the only ones seeing the problem with the stimulus bill recently signed by President Obama. A Democrat has now joined the club. After a governors meeting with Obama, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen said that Tennessee may be one of the states that refuse some of the money.

Like the other governors, he is concerned about the portion of the money earmarked for unemployment programs. If his state takes the money, it will be required to expand its unemployment program. The problem is that when the Federal money is gone, these states will be left holding the bag to fund an even larger unemployment program than they had before. As a result, they would be forced to raise business taxes to make up the shortfall. Most governors feel it would be unwise to raise taxes on businesses in a recession when jobs are being lost by the thousands. Here’s Bredesen’s take on it: Read More→

Last night in his first speech before a joint session of Congress, President Barack Obama told the nation that he was placingĀ  Vice Pres. Biden in charge of overseeing the spending of the $787 billion stimulus package. Obama said he was picking Biden for the job “because nobody messes with Joe”. This brought a huge grin to the Veep’s face and a standing applause by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who hopped up and down throughout the speech like an out of control jack-in-the-box.

Well, maybe nobody messes with Joe but it seems that Joe doesn’t mess with learning about the job he’s been handed. This morning, when V.P. Biden was asked on CBS to provide the name of the recovery website which has been set up to show the American people how the stimulus money is being spent, Biden said he didn’t know the “website number”. Website number? After looking off-camera and asking a staffer, he finally comes back with the answer (recovery.gov). It’s nice to know that our money is in safe hands with Joe.

The President attended an economic summit today where he announced he will cut the current budget deficit in half by the end of his first term. Well, how convenient…it looks like he’s already kicking off his re-election campaign. He went on to attack the “casual dishonesty” of previous budgets and pledged to change the way the budgeting process occurs.

“I want to be very clear. We cannot and will not sustain deficits like these without end. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom in Washington these past few years, we cannot simply spend as we please and defer the consequences to the next budget, the next administration and the next generation.”
